Description

Can a group of elderly drag queens save a 1950s nightclub from being taken over by the mob?

It's 1956 and television is stealing Alice's nightclub audience. Known as Al to everyone in the club scene, she has to try to prevent the mob from taking over her crippled club and turning it into a strip joint.

Her one solace: Juliana, the woman who haunts her memories and fuels her dreams of a brighter future. But the last time Al saw her was the day Juliana's husband caught them in bed together.

On the brink of losing her love and her livelihood, Al makes a bold decision. She arranges an extravagant production starring aging female impersonators, even though funding the show means going into debt.

Will the show succeed in saving her club and helping her find her way back to Juliana? Or will Al's big risk result in losing everything? Although the book is the fifth in the series it can read as a standalone.

DO YOU KNOW DOROTHY? is the fifth book in the Juliana series of historical LGBT fiction, but you can also enjoy it as a standalone novel.

This is a LGBT Historical Fiction, and this is the 5th book in the Juliana series. I have to say this is the first book in this series that I have read, but I did not feel lost while reading this book. I found this book very well written, and it was a story that shows us how things have changed over time. This book pulled me into it, and I wanted to save this characters from all the bad things happening to them just because they live during that time period where people just will not take people how they are. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Sans Merci Press) or author (Vanda Writer) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

I love reading period specific fiction especially when the writing is historically accurate and the characters bring it to life in a relatable story.

Life has always been a struggle for the LGBTQ community and the 50's were very difficult.

Al's story of club ownership, unfair laws, mob involvement in gay businesses is very real, compelling and a really good read.

Let me begin by stating that Book Five of the Julianna series does not disappoint. The characters, the storyline, the vivid prose fill the pages.
The path walked by the LGBT community in the 1950’s and 60’s was filled with shame. The snickering, the comments, the physical altercations were painfully endured. Being viewed as different harmed and destroyed the spirit of countless men and women.
Al’s story weaves this period with her own personal and professional struggles. She needs to keep her nightclub out of the hands of the mob. She puts caution to the wind and everything on the line with her decision to present a drag show at the club with aging female impersonators. This is a huge investment and an even greater risk. What lies ahead? Can Al and her club be saved?
Do You Know Dorothy is a quick paced, unforgettable read.
Thank you NetGalley, Vanda Writer and San Merci Press for an ARC in exchange for an honest book review.
