Description

From the attic of Lyntons, a dilapidated English country mansion, Frances Jellico sees them—Cara first: dark and beautiful, then Peter: striking and serious. The couple is spending the summer of 1969 in the rooms below hers while Frances is researching the architecture in the surrounding gardens. But she's distracted. Beneath a floorboard in her bathroom, she finds a peephole that gives her access to her neighbors’ private lives. To Frances' surprise, Cara and Peter are keen to get to know her. It is the first occasion she has had anybody to call a friend, and before long they are spending every day together: eating lavish dinners, drinking bottle after bottle of wine, and smoking cigarettes until the ash piles up on the crumbling furniture. Frances is dazzled. But as the hot summer rolls lazily on, it becomes clear that not everything is right between Cara and Peter. The stories that Cara tells don’t quite add up, and as Frances becomes increasingly entangled in the lives of the glamorous, hedonistic couple, the boundaries between truth and lies, right and wrong, begin to blur. Amid the decadence, a small crime brings on a bigger one: a crime so terrible that it will brand their lives forever.

Advance Praise

Bitter Orange is a twisty, thorny, darkly atmospheric page turner about loneliness and belonging, a book that delves into its protagonist's mind and heart even as she explores the secret-filled mansion at the novel’s center.” - Gabriel Tallent, New York Times bestselling author of MY ABSOLUTE DARLING

“Fuller is a masterful storyteller. Loved this book and my seduction began at page one!” - Stephanie Crowe, Page and Palette

Bitter Orange reminds me of so many novels I love, especially JL Carr's A Month in the Country, Daphne Du Maurier's Jamaica Inn, and Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Claire Fuller is such an elegant writer and this book is incredibly atmospheric, vivid, and intriguing. I had to keep reminding myself that I wasn't reading a forgotten classic.” - Emma Healey, author of ELIZABETH IS MISSING

“Like Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca, Bitter Orange sings, enchants, haunts. If not for Claire Fuller's stunning language and mastery of control, I'd have succumbed to the temptation to blaze through these pages just to see how the suspense resolves. A beautiful novel.” - Daniel Magariel, author of ONE OF THE BOYS

A little way into Bitter Orange I thought the voice sounded so familiar but couldn't put my finger on why. Then I decided to see what else Claire Fuller has written and there it was--Our Endless Numbered Days, which was one of my favorite books of 2015.

I'll be thinking about this one for a while. Frances is a memorable and troubled character and now that I know how the book ends, I'm thinking about earlier scenes more and more. This is one I'll have to buy when it's published so I can read it again and flip around the pages.

I flew through this one. I have been a fan of Claire Fuller since reading Swimming Lessons. This book follows the story of a couple, Peter and Cara and another character Frances. Frances becomes really intrigued with the couple and begins spending a lot of time with them. But little things start to make Frances start to question things about the couple. Go get this book.
