Description

The past is a dangerous place in this fast-paced time travel novel...

Kathryn Spears is a skeptical producer for a TV investigative news team. So when her grandmother claims a Cherokee Indian woman is living on a neighboring farm, she dismisses it as early Alzheimer's. Because, obviously, there is no farm nearby. Not in the present anyway. But when she follows Nana's lead, Kathryn is transported back in time to the year 1840 where she finds a young Cherokee woman left behind when her family marched west on the Trail of Tears.

Forest Water is ensnared in a perilous struggle to keep her ancestral lands against a violent white man who claims the farm, and then claims her as well. Desperate to help her new friend, Kathryn becomes entangled in a battle between good and evil with much higher stakes than she imagines.

Each of these young women falls in love with a man from her own time, but there are threats, both seen and unseen, that could cost them their lives.

The Going Back Portal is a fun time travel novel that deals with solving a mystery. Kathryn Spears works as a producer at a television studio and is very close to her grandmother. When her grandmother starts talking about their new neighbors, Kathryn walks over to where her grandmother said they lived to recreate the moment they appeared. With the help of some magic infused figs, Kathryn travels back through time and winds up meeting a woman who is being abused by her husband. This is the beginning of many adventures back into the past and Kathryn's journey to helping the Cherokee woman she meets from the past.

The writing was good and kept my interest! I had to know what happened! Kathryn is a strong, independent woman who meets someone new in this story. She tries hard to balance helping her new friend and not changing the future!

I just have one question: where can I get some of those special figs??

I volunteered give an honest review in exchange for a free copy of the book. Kathryn has a grandmother that she has dinner with on Friday evenings. Her grandmother talks about meeting an Indian woman with an infant in the back of her property. She says that the Indian woman and her family are staying on the property, and that she would like to introduce her granddaughter to them. When they go, there is no one there. Her granddaughter believes that her grandmother has Alzheimer's disease. However, Kathryn goes back to the area that the family is supposed to be staying in, and after eating a fig she is transported back in time. She has many questions for the Native American,. The young mother gives Kathryn her journal to answer her questions. Kathryn learns a lot about the time period during which the trail of tears occured. I really enjoyed this book, and the history that book portrays.
