Description

Politics, Money, Power, Religion, and Greed. These are the things we never again need.

Artist Matthew Sugiyama can alter the physical world with his art. As the top student graduating from the prestigious Popham Abbey, Matthew Sugiyama’s future is secure… until he bucks convention and begins a journey to find answers about his birth family. The trouble is, he doesn’t know who or where they are.

Determined to find answers, but without a clear destination, Matthew sets out on horseback across a post-technology world, guided only by random flashes of a vision or long-buried memory. Using his skills as an artist to barter for hospitality and supplies, Matthew soon learns his sheltered upbringing has left him wholly unprepared to face the obstacles on the road or his unexpected yearning to join the communities he encounters. When he uncovers a mysterious adversary’s plan to harm the people he’s come to care for, Matthew must decide what’s more important; the adopted family he has created, or his need for answers about his past.

Oil and Dust is the first book in the gripping Elemental Artist series. If you like low fantasy quests and character-driven stories, you'll love Jami Fairleigh's page-turning tale

This has the feel of a time far long ago, when actually it is very modern, futuristic even; it’s fascinating to see things come back around. It is a very unusual look at what our future could look like when it doesn’t contain hovercrafts and self-tying shoelaces.

It is full of such beautiful description that you can see the views, hear the horses hoofs, and taste the sumptuous feasts. It’s a long book but it doesn’t ramble or bore. There’s a lot of characters but you never feel lost. It’s twisty and turny but not confusing. Things are exposed to you in detail but it’s never patronising. It’s set in the future but without enough identifiable qualities to feel a part of it. It’s funny without being slapstick. It’s scary without being too horrific to read. It’s loving without being mushy. It’s an adventure without travelling too far. It’s violent without being too much.

I felt there was definitely a sense of CS Lewis about it, particularly at the end. I read a sequel is due in March 2022 and I’m already desperate to read it.

You would think graduating from the prestigious Popham Abbey securing your future would be enough to satisfy your desires. Yet, this is not the case for artist Matthew Sugiyama, who sets out into a post-technological world, far from the one he was brought up in to discover answers about his origins and family.

Fairleigh, is incredibly vast in her worldbuilding ability, giving her own narrative an artistic flair. The use of description creates realistic imagery in the reader's mind, allowing you to connect deeply to the journey of the main character. This in turn develops a fascinating narrative both within the story and in real life as some readers might find themselves questioning the world we live in and what impact we might ourselves be creating for our very own future.

Although beautifully depicted, sometimes some of the dialogue was slightly difficult to understand at the start but this soon changed as you become more involved in the story. Some might find this lends the narrative to be a little slow, but hold on as Fairleigh does an excellent job of captivating your attention as Matthew embarks further on his journey.

Fairleigh sets herself well in creating a fantasy series that creates compelling character development, intense emotional discovery, and a beautifully idyllic world. It is eloquently written, yet is truly adventurous with unexpected twists and surprises.

I loved this subtle and (mostly) gentle novel about finding one's place in the world. The characters are beautifully created with affection and are each layered and fascinating. Their quests and desires make them stand out in a world of service and community. and I am rooting for them to all find happiness. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kitsune Publishing for allowing me to read this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. This is a great first book of a series. It has a full story within it but also skillfully leaves questions for the reader to want for the next book! The magic system is very connected to science over mystical aspects and as a science teacher, I appreciate the physics references to how the artist can affect change in the environment. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book. I am so intrigued by this world which is set in a possible future of Earth. The general political/religious aspects are very interesting and definitely speak to our current societal issues. Very good story, wonderful writing, and I can’t wait for the next book!

A beautiful read, from start to finish. The story begins with Matthew on a journey to discover who his parents are and where he comes from. He finds friendship and love during his travels as an unknown force threatens to derail his quest. With lots of action and some laughs along the way, readers will be left anticipating the sequel.

I have not read a book in YEARS that made me feel the way this book did. At once triumphant and blindingly optimistic, and also powerful and compelling.

Matthew is the epitome of what a hero should be (even if he doesn't see it himself). Strong and resolute in his journey to find his family (and himself), he ends up finding a new family that he realizes he would die to protect.

I nearly cried in the last few chapters of this book. Viciously realistic imagery, a breathtaking peace and believable characters that make you love (or hate) them, combine to make this one of my favorite books that I've had the privilege to read this year. Highly recommended (keep your tissues close). Eagerly awaiting the sequel!

Thank you to Jami Fairleigh, Kitsune Publishing and Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. All opinions are my own.

This book was such a lovely surprise! The writing made me feel like I was there every step of the way with the MC. I just love it when that happens!

The plot was well paced, even with all the detail and I found the story and magic unique and refreshing.

I am looking forward to the sequel!
