The Dream Daughter

I can’t actually say that I believe time travel is possible, but I’m usually able to accept it in a work of fiction because anything can be made possible by an imaginative writer. Diane Chamberlain has made anything possible in this story and I was swept across the decades. What kind of unimaginable things would you do to save your unborn child ? What Carly does, reflects the depth of love of a mother for her daughter when she travels from 1970 North Carolina to 2001 New York so her unborn baby can have the in utero surgery needed to repair her heart defect. Armed only with this love of her baby and the trust in her brother-in-law Hunter who reveals his time travel secret to her in efforts to save the baby, Carly takes the jump through a portal to 2001. It’s a mind blowing experience for her as she makes her way in a world of technological advancements she never imagined in 1970, not just the medical aspects but cell phones and laptops, microwave ovens, etc. Events in our history are also seen from the different time frames such as The Vietnam War which is one of the central themes and 9/11.

The plan, of course, is to return to 1970 North Carolina with her healthy baby. Not everything goes smoothly, though, and the glitches that occur in Carly’s journey across the decades provide a page turning experience that kept me engaged with the story and connected emotionally to Carly. There are poignant moments that will make any parent’s heart ache and some that will fill them with joy. Although I almost always want to know more about characters that I come to care about, after the story is over, I thought the book would have been more affecting for me without the epilogue; thus 4 instead of 5 stars. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys time travel stories and most definitely to fans of Diane Chamberlain.

As I so boldly proclaimed, The Dream Daughter was one of my two most anticipated reads of 2018. I hadn’t heard much about this in way of synopsis but basically anything Diane Chamberlain writes is most anticipated for me. I eagerly opened the first pages and soon realized this book was centered around time travel - not being much in the way of “fantasy,” I immediately panicked that it might not be for me, but it’s freaking DIANE CHAMBERLAIN so, I figured I’d go with the flow. BOY AM I GLAD I DID!!!!!! While time travel is definitely a major part of this book, it’s such “classic” Diane Chamberlain at its heart that it’s absolutely perfect. I wanted to savor the story for a long time knowing there will be nothing more of hers to read for some time, but alas, I couldn’t put it down, I devoured every word and absolutely loved this story of family, love and the lengths we will go for our children, even those that are not born yet. Add this one to your TBR for sure!

Diane Chamberlain is a new author to me and while I understand this is not her normal type of book, I loved it! The plot had all these delicious twists and turns and you never knew where you were going to come out! I can't imagine how she came up with this plot, but it only shows how deep her writing talent runs. I was kept interested from the first sentence to the last, and It was a hard book to put down.
Her characters are so awesome!!! They are strong yet scared, determined yet unsure, strongly bonded by family ties yet ready to break those ties if need be. I loved all the characters in this book! I guarantee you will find yourself asking, "what would I do in that situation?"
I am honored to give The Dream Daughter a firm 5 stars and a you have to get this one!! Look for it October 2018

I have come to love Diane Chamberlain's books for their beautiful writing, engrossing plots, relatable characters, and compassionate discussion of moral issues. This books contains all of these elements and more. I am absolutley blown away by the creativity and novelty of this book! It contains all of the elements that I have come to love and expect from Diane Chamberlain AND adds an incredible, new twist! I was completely surprised and loved the direction this book took! I found myself discussing the dilemma in this book and wondering how I would react in the same situation! Wonderful!

This book was not my typical kind of book. I love Diane Chamberlain, so I have it a shot. And I am so glad I did. This book had everything you want in a family drama. It had drama, family, love and twists and turns. The characters were engaging and human, and you were rooting for them the whole way. I had to stop myself a few times from looking ahead to see what came next...I just couldn’t wait. For any fans of women’s fiction or family drama, this is your book.

As a big fan of Diane Chamberlain; I read everything she writes and anticipate the next book with bated breath I was anxious to read THE DREAM DAUGHTER. When I realized it involved time travel I was hesitant to read it as time travel and anything remotely sci-fi turn me off.

But since Ms. Chamberlain wrote it, I knew I had to read it, albeit not my favorite of her books it accomplished what her books do for me. I was invested in the characters. I wanted to take their journey with them and spend time in their world.

The book is also a book of a mother's love and the lengths women will go to for their child. For me, Diane Chamberlain took a subject I would normally not even give a chance and made it an enjoyable read. This solidifies my belief if Ms. Chamberlain writes a cereal box I want to read it.

A great beach read; make this the book you read this summer while relaxing on the beach, perfect, easy to read and interesting.

An emotional journey that will take you through time and space, with unbelievable twists and turns. All the characters are strong and believable and you find yourself thinking about them long after you have finished reading the book. I was on the end of my seat from start to finish trying to work out how to solve the problems that arise in the book it will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish!

Well, The Dream Daughter won't hit bookstores until October, but DC is one of my favorite authors and I have read every single one of her books. In this twenty sixth book DC walks on familiar territory by exploring the strength of the mother-daughter bond, adoption, and dealing with grief. But then she adds in a twist that is not a trademark of any of her previous books, which I am not going to reveal. Strangely, it managed to work for me and I enjoyed this slightly more than I anticipated that I would.In fact, I took the leap and immersed myself in the story.

Chamberlain has written a story that will leave your head spinning and your heart in your mouth! Fast-paced, a remarkable plot that stretches credibility and at the same time had me hoping that it is possible. I don't want to give anything away, but I highly recommend this book.

I loved this book! I love that it is unpredictable! Caroline Sears proves that a mother will do anything to save her child, even something that absolutely terrifies her. I highly recommend this book.

This story was a little slow at first and it's out of the realm of genres that I tend to read; however, the description was intriguing and I wanted to give it a chance.

I'm so glad that I did! I loved this book. The tale goes from 1970 to 2001 and a few other eras as well. I don't want to tell in detail as it will give some of the plot away.

Carly is pregnant with her first child; her husband Joe has been killed in the Vietnam War. She finds out that her baby is not healthy but seeing it is 1970 there is not much that can be done.

Enter her BIL, Hunter. He is a time traveler and can send her to the future to get the help that her baby needs. She is very skeptical at first but agrees to go. This is not an easy journey...there are many twists and turns along the way, and other characters come into play.

I would definitely recommend this book!

I've long loved Diane Chamberlain's books, THE DREAM DAUGHTER was a bit of a departure for her Instead of being set in two different time periods, this time she uses a "timeslip" plot to tell the story. The part set in the 1970s allows the reader to glimpse realistically or recall many fond memories and things. The parts set in the 21st C. we're compelling as well. Basically, without revealing spoilers, a recently widowed pregnant woman discovers her unborn child has a heart defect that's deadly within hours of birth. The woman's brother-in-law reveals to her that he is actually from the future and knows of surgery done in utero that could save her baby's life if she trusts him enough to slip into the future. It's absolutely unputdownable and highly recommended.

The Dream Daughter was both mystifying and captivating. The time travel possibilities were wonderfully mind boggling to contemplate. With plenty of twists and turns to keep me guessing, I REALLY hated to put this one down. (This was the second novel I have read from this author--masterful at mind-bending storylines. I have also read the Stolen Marriage, which was also amazing.) I am now most decidedly a Diane Chamberlain fan for life! Thank you, NetGalley!

Wow! I have read many of Diane Chamberlain's books in the past, and I requested this one without reading the description, so I was hugely surprised when I started reading it and discovered that two of the main characters are actually time traveling! It sounds crazy, I know... but I trust this author implicitly and so I chose to read on. I'm so glad I did. This is an amazing novel and every step of the way it was all totally heart-wrenching AND believable. I loved each character, and I give the author credit for making all the time changes seamless and not confusing. And I'm not saying any more, but I found the ending highly satisfying. Highly recommend!

I loved this book. It a the story a love that traverses time and boundaries and seemingly insurmountable obstacles, and is unlike anything you have ever read!

At an ultrasound, the baby is found to have a defect that will kill her, even should she survive birth. Hunter has a unique, even unbelievable proposition that can save the baby's life. Does Carly dare do what he suggests?

I started reading this book apprehensively. You see, I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi books and time travel falls into that category. While the time travel aspect of this book is important to the plot, the book's more important questions center around a mother's love and decisions about doing what is best for someone you love even if it breaks your heart.

I've loved many of Chamerlain's other books and this was no exception! Highly, highly recommend!

Time travel stories really have to be done right to pull it off and make the story believable. In The Dream Daughter, author Diane Chamberlain does just that.

The story begins in 1970 where we find Carly Sears pregnant with a sick baby. The doctors are unable to do anything to help the baby, who has a heart defect. Carly is alone, having lost her husband in the Vietnam War. She lives with her sister and her husband, Hunter. Fortunately for Carly and the baby, Hunter is a time traveler. He sends Carly to the year 2001, where she can have fetal surgery to repair the baby’s heart and save her life. However, the baby’s health is not good and Carly is forced to return to 1970 without her, in what she hopes is a temporary arrangement. When she tries to return to 2001 though, something goes terribly wrong.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The concept of time travel is one of those well-worn plot elements, but this author did it right. The story melded together very well and the plot was not too unbelievable. Carly’s experiences in a new decade were totally convincing. The time travel method is not overly complicated for a reader to understand either. The reasons for everything Carly does are solid too.

My one objection is that Hunter made such a glaring mistake. Anyone who lived in the era of 9/11 would remember it. It would be seared in their memory. So, I was upset when Hunter ‘forgot’ and accidentally sent Carly back on the morning of 9/11/2001. He should have known that any such large disturbance would affect the calculations. If even a wind could make a difference, then those events certainly would. I understand that it was integral to the plot that something throw off the calculations, but at the time when I read it, I was angry with Hunter for failing to take that into consideration. Good writing does that. It draws the reader into the story and they react to the characters as if they were real people. So, it did work the way it was supposed to. After all, if he’d been correct, then the rest of the events would never have happened and it would not have been as good a story. As a reader, you could predict what was coming though, if you counted the months between Carly’s arrival and her due date.

As it was, the story was quite good, with a big conflict around the decisions Carly has to make once she finds Joanna. It was emotionally painful to see that she lost her baby, but she did regain the relationship eventually. The hard part was knowing how many years would separate mother and child.

This book is one of my top 5 of the year so far. I enjoyed it that much. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good time travel tale.

I loved this book!! This has some new elements for Diane Chamberlain, but the story and writing is exactly what you have come to know and love about her books. I loved the characters in this book so much. My heart broke for them and I was so worried about what was going to happen to them. Carly is brave and strong and just a beautiful soul. Hunter was a fun character. I was curious about him and was a little surprised by his secret. There is so much love and hope with this novel. I couldn't put it down even while biting my nails worried about what is going to happen. I loved the ending and I couldn't stop thinking about this story once I finished.

A very interesting and intriguing story. Time travel from 1970's to 2001 and back. A pregnant woman with a baby with a heart problem that can't be fixed in uterus in 1970 but can in 2001. What do you do? What are the challenges. Hard to put this story down even though I am not a fan of time travel stories. Read this one.

I love Diane Chamberlain and was so excited for this novel. It was slow going in the beginning, and I wasn’t sure if I bought the time travel. But then with a few plot twists, the anxiety set and I found myself yelling out loud to the characters. Just like some of her earlier novels, I could not put this down and felt like I was holding my breath the second half of the book. A fantastic read!

I was so excited to read Diane Chamberlain's new book - The Dream Daughter. I picked it solely for the fact it was a Diane Chamberlain book. I tried not to read too much about it before diving into the story. It was a great story and it had a different premise from her other books. I don't want to give too much away but I was a little surprised when I started reading and figured out there was a little sci-fi to it. To me all of Diane Chamberlain books are great stories but they are all also very unique. This is why I love reading her books. This one did not disappoint. All of the characters area likable and the determination of a mother is hard to beat. I also loved the different parts in history that this book touches on throughout the story. This is a hard book to put down once you start reading it.

Diane Chamberlain novels are more melodramatic than they are suspenseful for me, but I thought I would give Dream Daughter a chance. I was right it was very sappy and dramatic but it was a nice change of pace from my usual taste.very sweet book.

Diane chamberlain has pieces together a magical story that includes love, loss and the ultimate sacrifice.

I started this book last night and I literally read it in one sitting. The story line drew me in from the very first chapter. I laughed and I cried. This was my first exposure to this author and I want to read so much more.

I always love Chamberlain's books and was so excited to get this preview. However, when the topic of time travel came up in the story, I will admit that I rolled my eyes, groaned a little, and figured this book was not going to be one that I would enjoy. But, I ended up loving it! The book kept my mind working the whole time and I like the science behind some of the story as well. This wasn't a predictable story for me and that is why I also really enjoyed this book.

Diane Chamberlain does it again! I think she writes brave books, and they always leave me with lots to ponder and think about, which I love. She is one of the best.

Read it!! Ms. Chamberlain did not disappoint in this book. I found this to be a great, awesome story. I have read several of her books and I was wondering about the time travel thing, but the way she portrayed the events, blended in so well and really did not seem all that farfetched, I know, sounds silly doesn’t it.
She really pegged some of the major changes you would experience if you traveled decades ahead or back in time. I was drawn in to all the characters of the story, and cared about them. The buildup to the ending was good and the actual ending was even better. I did have to really think about some of the dates the characters came in, went out and then maybe came back and I did not see several of the happenings she brought in, coming at the end. Every once in a while I felt Carly repeated herself but it certainly did not take away from the story.
I would highly recommend for any reader, especially Chamberlain fans. Giving this a big high 5*****

I love time travel and this book is superb!
I read with one eye open each time Carly took the "jump"! She was so trusting that this was the right thing to do, as I waited with my heart in my throat for a fall!
What a Mother does for her child -including traveling to a different time, for a life saving intervention, is only the beginning of this unique and well written novel.
Diane Chamberlain pulled each thread together to create a heart stopping plot.
I believe a Mom's love will go to any length to make sure her child's life holds all the hope and joy in the world,

The Dream Daughter is an amazing read! The characters are complex with real life emotions. The whole premise of time travel is intriguing and kept me guessing how things might turn out. I enjoyed remembering the various times and how they affected my life. The Dream Daughter is a book that I want to share!

This book was an ARC from NetGalley and I must admit a different one from the books I usually read. I am not a stranger to Diane Chamberlain books, but she took this story in a whole new direction. No murder or mystery here....ok, there is mystery here. But she takes it to a new level by introducing Time Travel.

The story is set in 1970 - Carly loses her husband to the VietNam War - and finds she is pregnant with his child - but doctors there tell her the baby will not live because of a heart condition. Her brother in law (who is a time traveller himself - a whole other story there) suggests she travels to 2001 because in that time period medicine is doing wonders with infants that have heart problems.

Who wouldnt want to save their child? So Carly travels to that era. And so the story tells us what happens, the trials and tribulations of being torn between two time eras and the decisions Carly has to make to help both her baby and herself.

This book brings together unconditional love, family ties and the unbelievable science all in one package. Make sure you put it on your TBR list when it comes out in October of 2018.

I really liked The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain! While it was different from her usual books, it was still wonderful. I loved the storyline and the characters even though everything didn't turn out the way I was hoping it would.

WOW- Just, WOW! I finished this beauty in just a few hours. It was impossible to put down as it sucks the reader in from the very first page with an incredible twist right off the bat! Diane Chamberlain has created a masterpiece. Every one of her books leaves me with such a feel-good attitude but this one takes the cake!

The Dreamers Daughter

I truly loved this book! I don’t remember ever reading a book about time travel before but am so glad that I did this one.

The one aspect of this book that really stood out to me was the intense and powerful message of unbinding love Carly had for her daughter. To take the risks that she took so that her baby, Joanna could live and eventually have a healthy life was mind blowing. I don’t know if I would want to time travel. Even though I miss the simplicity of life in the 60’s and 70’s. 😁

The characters are very well developed. You truly feel like you know them. I got drawn into this book and did not want to put it down. For me it was a nonstop page turner. I certainly didn’t expect the ending to happen the way it did.

Wow, Diane Chamberlain has knocked it out of the park once again! Admittedly, I was a tad hesitant to dive into The Dream Daughter because this isn’t my typical read. Of course, Diane Chamberlain has always been one of my favorite authors and has never let me down, and boy am I glad I gave it a go— absolutely phenomenal!

I cannot express enough how well thought-out and well-crafted The Dream Daughter’s storyline is! I really encourage everyone to go in as blind as you can!!! Soooooo in saying that, I don’t want to touch on the details, but I will say this book is definitely on my 2018 favorites list! If you are looking for a novel that will captivate, fascinate and entertain you, than this 5 star read is one you won’t want miss!

For this book I suspended disbelief and ran with it and I am so glad I did! This story really allows one to wonder if it could really happen and enjoy the way way events unfolded. Right from the very first pages I knew that THE DREAM DAUGHTER was going to affect me emotionally; 1) because it is from a writer whose prose and story lines are incredibly enduring, and 2) because the book description gripped me right from the start and I knew I had to read it.

Set in the late 60’s and early 70’s you start off with a chance meeting of a patient, Hunter that no one could through to except a young PT therapist who was assigned to him. Their meeting almost seemed fated and an interesting comment of “you’re going to love my sister” in the prologue gave me a hint of what might be coming.

From the first chapter you’ll discover that Hunter, whom Caroline had introduced to her sister was now her brother-in-law. Caroline is a young wife waiting for her husband to come home from Vietnam and just discovering she is pregnant a joyous event she can’t wait to surprise her husband with! Unfortunately, the doctors have just informed Caroline that her baby has a serious heart defect that will likely kill the child before it could even be born.

Except, Hunter, kind of a mysterious guy from the get-go, is telling Caroline that something can be done about her baby's heart. Something that will require a leap of faith, strength and courage that Caroline never knew existed. A strength she mustered from the bottom of her soul to save the unborn child she loved with all her heart!

You’ll be on pins and needles for most of the read and the things Caroline goes through from her baby daughter. When you finish this book you will be as drained emotionally as I was and it will be a testament to the love from a mother for her child that brings those emotions to the forefront.

Bottom line: Another tremendously satisfying read from the brilliant author Diane Chamberlain. Incredible story!

I loved this book; it was a completely unexpected delight. I have read nothing else by author Diane Chamberlain and had no idea what this book was about except for the brief description accompanying it. Full disclosure: I have weak knees and undying devotion to good books that take place in North Carolina and involve some type of time travel. The time travel because I love the notion of experiencing any time, but uniquely ours, through a different vantage point. North Carolina because, well, if you’ve ever been there, you realize there’s no question why. Those are really just aspects of setting the stage for the plot; magnificent aspects, truly, but not enough in and of themselves.

THE DREAM DAUGHTER has fully developed characters that draw us into their lives and hold us tightly as we wait to see how they handle the ups and downs of their fate. In places where I worried that author Chamberlain would slow down (meaning I might skip ahead), she didn’t. She kept faith with me throughout the book. That’s such a generous trait for an author, to remember her readers are tracking details that may not conform rigidly to the story she wishes to tell.

If you don’t love time travel, this is a classic fish-out-of-water tale. A mother must procure a solution for her desperately sick child. As in all quests, obstacles and surprises will transpire on the way to her goal. It’s a great tale with many twists and turns. I was lucky to receive a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

A very unusual love story and mystery. The unbelievable becomes very believable as the future becomes the past and the past becomes the future! i don't usually like sci-fi but this story I could not put down. I love the characters and the emotions they experience seem very real.

I’ve read many of Diane Chamberlain’s novels and loved almost all of them. This one is definitely in my top favorites of hers. It was such a great story about a woman that would do anything to save her unborn child, including time travel. And how Traveling could go terribly wrong. I don’t know if I would have been able to do what Carly did in 2013, but I really enjoyed her character and story. She gave Joanna a great life and that took a lot of sacrifice on her part.

I do not believe this author can write a bad book. Another great story- well written and absorbing. Thrilled to get it and read it!

This book just totally blew my mind away. I love Diane Chamberlain and this is not her typical book, it's even better. The idea of time travel in a book of hers is unthinkable until I couldn't put the book down. A great story with outstanding characters. A mother who's love and determination allow her to overcome her fears and do the unthinkable to give her daughter life and later the life that she deserves. What would you do for your child? Would you believe in the unimaginable and take a chance to save her. Carly does just that and more with the help of her brother-in-law. Finding herself widowed and pregnant, she is faced with the one thing a mother never wants to hear. But, Hunter gives her a solution, if she can only trust and believe. After doing the impossible, things go awry and she is left to make decisions that no mother should have to make.

Beautifully written. I absolutely loved visiting different decades. Diane did a superb job of keeping facts together and incorporating them into her story so that you could believe it.

Emotionally gripping. This story had me in tears by the last page. A mother's love and courage for her daughter, and the unbelievable gift of life. You will not be disappointed with this book. It is a must read for everyone.

I love books by Diane Chamberlain and this was no exception. Lately most books are getting too much alike , such as the next "Gone GIrl". This was had me turning the pages to find out what happened next. I wasn't sure I would like the time travel aspect of this book, but it definitely worked. Carley's brother-in-law helps her go ahead in time to save her unborn baby girl. She ends up going back and forth in time. Lots of twists that kept me waiting to see where she would land, time wise. Even the epilogue was a surprise. Read it, you won't be disappointed. This would make a great movie.

I don't normally do time travel anything but glad I read through this one. Love all of Diane's books and this didn't disappoint. Great characters and detail from the years presented as well as locations. Heart strings will be tugged on a few times. Loved the ending!

I really don’t know how authors like Diane Chamberlain and Karen White consistently write these incredible, detailed novels that are SO GOOD and come out almost yearly. Its very hard to write and research and put together a book that pulls readers in from page one but Diane Chamberlain does it every single time. I have read many of her books and they are always excellent.

Here is her newest, The Dream Daughter. I don’t even need to check out a synopsis because I already know I’m going to love it. But here’s one for you:

My favorite Diane Chamberlain book. Loved it! Different kind of story line; but I couldn't put it down. I still want to know what happened next. Great read!

The 1970's! How peaceful life seemed back then! No cell phones, no computers, no internet...If you wanted to know something you went to the library or to your encyclopedias. We were in the middle of Civil Rights, Women's Rights, the never ending Vietnam war...a man walked on the moon! Life was full of possibilities! Would you leave it behind to travel to a future you couldn't even imagine existed? To save your unborn child, would you?

I Love Time-Travel! The differences in the 70's and the 2000's was brought into focus, (it was an ideal time back then, wasn't it? or at least simpler). What would you do to save your child?

I really enjoyed meeting the characters in this book, they were 'real' people dealing with circumstances that were unheard of back then and taken for granted in our future. I found it fascinating to watch Carly navigate from one time-period to the next.

I have enjoyed all of Dianne Chamberlain 's books and this was Very Good!

The time travel mystery made me consider what I would miss from 2018. We have problems, but think of the technology. It would truly be amazing to be transported here from 4o years ago.

I love this book, as I have loved all of her others. I loved how the time travel was used to show the story about the bind between the mother and the child. As with all Diane Chamberlain books, the twist at the end was great and unexpected!

Perfectly delightful book. Something a bit different which was very well presented. Enjoyed all of the characters and it just made me feel good after finishing reading.

I was so excited to receive an advanced copy of my favorite authors newest novel from Netgalley, however I was immediately nervous when I realized that the book centered around time travel..... I was completely put out, as Diane Chamberlain’s books are so special.....very different stories but the same brilliant style and genre.
I was absolutely wrong! This book is beautifully written, it has all of the qualities we’ve come to love from this amazing author, just a slightly different approach.
Please please go out and buy this book if you’re a Fan of her books......heck go out and buy this book even if you’re not, because I promise you that you just might find your next favourite author.....than go out and check out all of her other books. You will not be disappointed!!!

What a wonderful, well-written story that gripped me from the beginning. Diane Chamberlain has a way with words. I enjoy all of her books and this one did not disappoint! Love caught between the times..how amazing and far things have come.

This is truly an interesting, engaging and captivating book. I was completely drawn into the story of a woman willing to try something daring and possibly dangerous in order to save the life of her unborn daughter. With the guidance and assistance of her brother-in-law (who has his own story to tell), she travels forward through time to a place in the future with the technology to operate in utero. Of course, a myriad of things go wrong creating a series of situations and decisions she must make, none of them easy or painless. The beauty of the story unfolds as she makes the difficult decisions and as the story progresses from the choices she makes.
The book is a departure from other offerings from Ms. Chamberlain but does not lose the flavor, essence or high degree of writing that mark all of her books.

It's 1970 and the Vietnam War is raging. Carly is expecting a child and has suffered through the loss of her beloved husband in the war. She can't wait to have this child that was conceived in so much love until she finds out that the child has a heart problem. This medical issue will not be able to be treated by doctors and Carly is told that there is no hope. Amid the devastation that Carly feels, her brother-in-law gives her an option that she never could imagine. At this point, I really don't want to give away any more of the plot. I first began to read the book thinking that it was going to be a story of the 1970's and the Vietnam War. I was blown away by the rest of the story! Diane Chamberlain is such a gifted writer who takes the reader anywhere or to any time that she writes about. As a mother, I was so empathetic toward Carly.....someone who would do ANYTHING to save her child. But, the real question is "How far would you go?" I highly recommend this amazing book!

The Dream Daughter is my first read by Diane Chamberlain. I loved it!! I was instantly hooked with Chamberlain easy writing style and flowing words. I was intrigued where Chamberlain would go with the time traveling subject and boy, did it ever work for me! Caroline, or Carly, was married with her husband in fighting in Vietnam when she finds herself pregnant with her first child. Sadly, Joe is killed in action and Carly is left to deal with their child all alone. As the story unfolds, you find out baby Joanna has a heart defect and will die shortly after birth, This is where the impossible becomes possible. Hunter, Carly's brother in law, tells Carly she can time travel to the future and save her baby. Without giving too much away, this story is amazing! Every time I thought I had it all figured out, Chamberlain throws you through another loop! I will definitely be recommending this book to others and I will be checking out additional works by Chamberlain! Oh, Diane Chamberlain. Why do all your books make me cry??

I absolutely LOVED this book. It's so beautifully written, and it makes you FEEL. This book is not like all her previous books, it has a science fiction feel to it but it works wonderfully. I loved it.

I certainly never thought a story based around time travel would be my cup of tea, but this one was! Loved the family connections, the history, the love story. I really enjoyed all of the surprises throughout the novel, and it was hard to put down. Loved it!

Beautifully written story about giving up the world as you know it and the love between a child and mother. I felt to my core the difficult decisions the main character faced throughout the journey of this story. As usual, Diane does not disappoint in creating a novel I could not put down.

When I saw a Diane Chamberlain book available for request I couldn't wait to ask for it. Diane is one of my very favourite authors so I didn't even read the book description. All of her other books have been excellent so why should this one be any different. . Once I saw that the book involved time travel I did think I might have made a mistake as that isn't my kind of reading. How wrong I was !!! This book is totally amazing and I loved every bit of it. What a brilliant story . I can't recommend it highly enough

The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain is a historical/science fiction novel about a young woman in the 70’s whose husband dies during the Vietnam War. A few weeks after his death, she discovers that she is pregnant and that the baby has a major heart defect. Her baby will not survive once out of the womb. Carly is devastated as this baby is all that is left of her husband. Her brother-in-law is not exactly who is says he is. He is a traveler from the future and he persuades Carly to go to the year 2001 where she will find medical help for her baby. After proof that Hunter is from the future, Carly accepts to make the time travel to save her daughter. Once born, Joanna is very sick and cannot travel back with Carly. Carly must leave her daughter to go back to the past but promises her that she will come right back to bring her back to 1970. But time travel can be tricky, and Hunter must calculate the portal very carefully taking into consideration all the possible disturbances that could alter Carly’s journey. He forgot one thing… he is returning Carly to the future in New York on the morning of September 11, 2001. When Carly lands, she quickly discovers that she is in New York, right where she was supposed to arrive, but the year is 2013. Devastated, Carly contacts Hunter’s mom and tries to find her daughter who is now 13.

I don’t want to share more and give away the entire plot. This is a fantastic novel which will bring you on a very poignant journey. Every mother will recognize the emotions Carly is experiencing and understand the hard decisions she must make. Wonderful story!

I fell in love with Diane Chamberlains books a year or so ago and have become obessed with her stories.
I received this ARC as was thrilled.

The Story was not what I was expecting at all, and as I got more into it, I almost hit a point of "Are you serious? Am I really reading about this?. But I kept going and I'm so glad I did.

Its 1970 and pregnant Carly has just been told her unborn child has a heart defect and there is no much hope that anything can or will be done. Hunter (her Brother in Law) has a shocking secret and actually thinks he can help her.

Carly will do anything for her child. ANYTHING and finds herself in a world where nothing is familiar. This story is about love, faith and family.

Do not let the "sci-Fi" ingredient turn you off. while, yes its a little far fetched, its beautifully written and becomes the background. Not the main focus of the book. Diane Chamberlain has just a wonderful way with words and connects with her readers is a way so many can not.

Reading the Dream Daughter was pure delight ! I have read several novels by this author and was expecting a similar writing style and plot. I was pleasantly surprised to read this novel because the story was so different from anything I have read by any author. The character development was terrific. I really cared about the welfare of each and every character . This novel also explored the topic of time travel in such a unique way that I actually considered that this could occur! The topic of adoption was also part of the novel and was handled in a very loving and positive way. Anyone that is interested in reading a different type of novel that is extremely well written should tead this novel. I do not think you will be disappointed !

This book was absolutely amazing. It exceeded all of my expectations. This may be the best book of Ms. Chamberlain's that I have ever read.

Carly is living in 1970 and learns that she is pregnant with her late husband's baby. She is told that there is something wrong with her baby's heart and that there is nothing the doctors can do to save her baby's life. She is heartbroken until she learns from her brother in law that there may be something that he can do for her...

This book has a slight sci-fi angle to it but it does not overpower the story. I would tell anyone who is wary of sci-fi to read anyway, they will not be disappointed. There are twists and turns and I never knew where the story was headed. It made me think about what I would do in Carly's situation, and it is true that there is nothing a mother won't do for her child. The ending was perfect.

I highly, highly recommend this book for all readers. This is one of the best books I read this year, hands down.

Enjoyed the time travel aspect and feel it was done well. Sometimes that can get confusing for the reader, not so in this case. Characters were well developed and likeable, and I felt there was good interaction between them all. Dialogue was believable as well. The story was well paced and I loved the ending. Another great read form this author, who I have been a fan of for over 20 years.

I love Diane Chamberlain’s books! Absolutely love that she’s still writing and producing better books than ever! I still think about this book every once in a while!

So this book was...trippy. That's the best way I can think to describe it. There is time traveling, heart break, friendships, puppies, children, and hope. Honestly, it may be one of the best books I have read this year and absolutely recommend it. It isn't normally the type of book I read, but I really loved it and kept thinking "there is no way her baby isn't going to be with her."

I have read lots of books by Diane Chamberlain so her books are not new to me. She is one of the Authors I tend to watch for as I think she rocks. She didn't disappoint me in this book. I am loving it. Only have 1 chapter left. I would love it if we could really time travel. That is what this book is about. Carly lost her husband in one of the Vietnam War . In 1970. Right after he leaves she finds out she is with child. He dies ( so she thinks ) and she never got to let he know. Hunter came from future but has not reveled this YET . When he does he does because the baby girl will die as soon as she is born because of heart condition. In 2001 they can do fetal heart surgery. Hunter sends Carly to 2001 for surgery on the baby and to give birth.
Yes I recommend this book.

Stunning! Intense! Powerful! Unique! So much more I could say but I want to leave most of it for the reader to experience. It is the story of Carly, who realises she is pregnant just after her husband dies. It is 1970 and she lives with her sister and brother-in-law in North Carolina. Carly discovers her baby has a serious heart defect, one she is unlikely to survive. Then her brother-in-law, Hunter, tells her something so unbelievable. He can send her through time to 2001 so that Carly can see a specialist in fetal surgery. She would then be able to come back to 1970, with her baby. Carly finds this so hard to believe, but she is desperate to save her baby and agrees to do it. What follows is a mesmerising story of love, courage and difficult decisions. You won’t be able to put this one down! This is one of my top ten books I read this year!

I have never read a Diane Chamberlain but I can say I have a new author to follow. I really enjoyed The Dream Daughter. So good so good. Thank you for letting me read.

Now, I'm also someone who reads blind; I rarely read the synopsis. I trust certain authors and genres, the reviews of others, I follow the buzz and I love a good cover and this doesn't always work to my advantage as you can imagine. To say that I was blind-sided to find out that this book was about time travel is an understatement. I had no idea. I can't recall ever reading a book with time travel.

When Caroline is told that her baby has a heart defect and won't live long outside of the womb she's devastated. She just lost her husband in Vietnam and this was baby was a piece of him, it would be cruel to lose them both. Her brother-in-law, Hunter, then tells her of a way but what he explains to her is unthinkable. Impossible.

It was a little mushy at times and I felt it stalled out once, which is ultimately what prevented me from giving it 5 stars but Diane Chamberlain is a master at story telling.

It took me two days to read what is now considered one of my all-time favorite books. I’ve been a fan of Diane Chamberlain ever since I read The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes. I then went back and read all of her older books and have read all of her current books as soon as they’ve been released. I can honestly say that the description of this book didn’t sound like a Diane book, and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect; I thought it might be slow reading. I’m thrilled to say I was completely wrong. It was AMAZING! The word that kept coming to mind as I was reading was riveting. I wanted to stay up all night to finish. A story about time travel? That’s not science fiction? Nah, not interesting to me. Carly didn’t believe in time travel either. Diane made us both believers.

I cannot thank NetGalley enough for the opportunity to read The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain. I must admit that that I had not read the synopsis and when I started finding out that this book is about time travel, I was not sure that it was going to be for me. I decided to stick with the book since it was a Diane Chamberlain book. WOW!!! I LOVED LOVED LOVED The Dream Daughter. I could hardly put it down!! I cannot reccomend The Dream Daughter highly enough. It’s a must read!!

A very ambitious choice for Diane Chamberlain, but she pulled it off. I really, really liked this novel, and highly recommend it for fans of her earlier work, or anyone that likes an emotional family drama. Also: time travel!

Discovering she was pregnant after her husband Joe’s death in Vietnam was the only thing keeping Carly Sears going, but learning her baby had a serious heart defect, for which there was no remedy, was a devastating blow. Her sister Patti and brother-in-law Hunter were as supportive as possible; though Carly was not prepared for the solution Hunter offered. He proposed that she utilize his calculations and time travel to 2001, where Carly would be able to have surgery for baby Joanna, before she was born, to correct the heart defect in utero. After giving Carly some money, with appropriate dates on the bills, and ensuring she had his mother’s phone number and address, Hunter helped Carly “step off” the pier in Nags Head.

Joanna spent so much time in the NICU that Carly was concerned about missing her portal back to 1970, wanting nothing more than to take Joanna back with her. Finally Carly made the trip back alone, leaving Joanna in the hospital, in order to retrieve another set of coordinates from Hunter, planning that she would be gone no more than a day or so. Hunter quickly calculated several sets of coordinates, giving Joanna more time to heal if necessary. Unfortunately, Hunter didn’t remember clearly his time in 2001, and Carly’s return to Manhattan was scheduled for September 10, 2001.

I’ll freely admit that I’m a sucker for a good, solid time travel story, and this one did not disappoint. Carly’s desperation, first at losing Joe and then at the possibility of losing Joanna, gave her the incredible strength necessary to face the unknown. Hunter was well versed in time travel, and thought of almost every eventuality, especially the five-trip maximum, and since he had chosen to remain in 1970 with Patti, he would be unable to return had he gone to 2001 to look for Carly. This well-written, captivating story kept me engaged throughout.

5 stars for me. This book is nothing short of amazing. I'm so glad I received this book as an ARC. I look forward to reading other books from this author.

Holy cow!!! Where do I begin??? This book had me from the very beginning!! It was so well written! A little different from what I would “normally” read, but Diane is simply amazing!!!! Get your tissues ready as you embark on this roller coaster!!!

Once in a while you begin a book and you just know practically from the very first word that you are going to simply love a book. This book was that way for me! I had finally finished a book that seemed to take forever to finish because I simply did not like a single character within the book despite the plot being a fine idea and found myself just resisting spending a single moment to finish it. If I hadn’t committed to a fair and balanced review, I’d have tossed the book aside so I could go on to a better read.

This book is wonderful. A young pregnant widow learns that her brother in law is actually a time traveler from the future and when her baby needs life saving heart surgery in utero that doesn’t yet exist, her brother in law asks her to simply trust him...... it is a wonderful idea and reminds me of a book I read a lifetime ago called Replay by Ken Grimaldi. It is still a well loved book in my household with one of my sons currently reading it. While you have to overlook some of the flaws in the storyline, each character is well drawn, relatable, and you just want to keep reading because you come to really care what happens. Well done!! Be prepared to look at the clock and regretfully realize it is 2 AM and you really have to go to bed. It really is a wonderful, inventive story about people that start to feel like real friends and you really want to know what happens next.....as the story comes to an end, you just keep wishing there was more because it is a very special world.

Anything by Diane Chamberlain is worth the time. This book was no exception. I like reading about time travel as I am a history buff.
This story may have been incredible in many ways , however, I had a hard time putting it down. It will be difficult to start another book after this.

Just finished this wonderful book by Diane Chamberlain...I am a fan of hers..but this book is very different and yet I hear her voice on every page. The genre of time=travel is not one I am fond of or usually read..but because of the author I wanted to get my hands on it. It does not disappoint...She tells a story that is very creative and takes much talent to keep on trace...all her nuances from today and yesteryear are right-on.
The little twists make it that much more enjoyable... I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to spend some hours reading it...because once you begin...it will be hard to put down....

In the first couple pages of this book, I had to go back to the description to make sure it was her book and her plot, because it seemed so different than her normal plot. Wow. I also normally steer clear of time travel, for reasons unknown to me. This book was so well done, and I felt like I knew the characters. I don't usually tear up while reading, and this one had me tearing up AND, at one point, literally putting my hand over my mouth in surprise. What if you could go back in time to save your child's life? What if you knew there could be consequences even you couldn't anticipate? Trust me: this is not a science fiction type novel. This is a novel about family, choices, life and love. I couldn't recommend this more highly.

I found this book impossible to put down. It starts out with weird feelings about a guy, goes to Vietnam War issues, lots of time travel and the love, be it biological or adopted for a child. As a mother, my heart aches still to make those big choices.

This is a story about time travel but nothing like the Outlander series. This a beautiful story about a mother’s love for her child. Would you travel in time to save your daughters life? I don’t want to tell more about the story because I want you to read it and experience all the twists and turns. It’s the best book I’ve read for quite a long time. Wish I could give it six stars!

Diane Chamberlain is one of my favorite authors. Normally I am not a fan of time travel but this book kept my attention. I loved all of the characters and really felt for their situations. There were many times when I was sitting at the edge of my seat because the story was so gripping. I live in Noth Carolina and recently visited the outer banks so I enjoyed chamberlain's descriptions of the area. I will purchase this book for the library and trust that my patrons will love the book as much as I did.

Time travel is not usually a choice of mine, but the Dream Daughter was one I really enjoyed. Reading for enjoyment is important to me and this book entertained.

Carly, in 1970, learns her unborn child has a probable fatal heart issue. Hunter reveals he is from the future and feels her baby can be saved if she goes to 2001. A huge gamble it is, but staying in 1970 is not an option if she wants this baby to live.

Wow, this book was amazing. Completely different from Diane’s other books but I loved it! I couldn’t put it down. The story line was excellent and I fell in love with Carly, the main character. The family ties in this book are so strong and the love the have is real and seems to jump off the page. Carly is pregnant in 1970, recently widowed, and sent to 2001 to hopefully receive surgery on her baby's heart. Imagine her surprise at how different the world was from 1970 to 2001!

And that's only the beginning. The author takes us to 2013, throws many obstacles and painful, heartwrenching decisions at Carly, and gives the reader a real page-turner to see how Carly's going to make it through. Clever writing, clever story!

The year is 1970. Soon after she learns that her husband was killed in Vietnam, twenty-seven year old Carly learns that she is pregnant. Then she learns that her baby has a heart defect that will kill her shortly after she is born. That is when Carly's brother in law, Hunter, tells her that he is a time traveler and can arrange for her to travel to the year 2001, when there is surgery available that may be able to save her baby's life.

Despite the fear of leaving her only remaining family member, her sister Patty, Carly literally jumps at the chance to save the life of her baby. Life in the future is full of unknowns and questions but Carly will do anything to save her baby. This is a book of a mother's love of both her baby and her recently deceased husband. She has to gather every bit of courage to take this journey and once in the future, she suffers many set backs and struggles but she does not give up.

One of the things I liked about this book is that even though we were aware of the thoughts of both Carly and Hunter, both characters were still likable. Hunter wants to share what he can to help Carly save her baby. Carly was willing to give up everything for her baby and in ways that she would not have expected, farther along in the book. This was a very enjoyable read and I thank St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for this ARC.

Oh. My. Gahd. All the feels!

Carly is a young, pregnant widow in 1970 who learns that the baby she is carrying has a birth defect that pretty much guarantees she won't survive more than a day outside the womb. As this child is the only piece of her beloved husband that she has left, she is despondent at hearing this news.

Enter her quirky, but very lovable brother-in-law, who tells her there is a way to save her baby. However, what is required is so far 'out there', that it seems an impossible, or at the very least, highly improbable answer to her dilemma. Travel to the future where (when?) a medical procedure exists that will save her unborn child.

I love me a good time travel book, and this one did not disappoint. I even found the method of achieving time travel to be interesting, and my heart was pumping in shared anxiety with the main character as she took the first plunge (literally).

As the mother of a little girl myself, I truly connected with Carly, and reading about her time leading up to delivery, as well as the time spent in the hospital with her newborn, brought my own memories of that time to the forefront.

However, I have to say I struggled with certain plot twists. Without going into 'spoiler-alert' style details, I will say I had to put the book down at one point and take a break because I Just. Could. Not. Continue. Could not imagine being there and making the kind of decisions she was faced with. Could not answer those questions for myself with 100% certainty, which was why I had to step away for a few days before returning to see how the author resolved the issues.

Even more plot twists awaited, but in the end, I felt that satisfying sense of a story well-told. Closure was achieved, and I could once again rest easy.

Highly recommended - but with a trigger warning for mothers.

Being a big fan of Diane Chamberlain; I was anxious to read The Dream Daughter. When I realized it involved time travel I was a bit hesitant as I'm not remotely interested in this genre. However, since Ms. Chamberlain wrote it, I knew I had to read it, and wow am I pleased I did. It had drama, family, love and twists and turns in abundance. Highly recommended

I am usually a biography and historical fiction fan so The Dream Daughter is not a typical read for me, yet I thoroughly enjoyed this fictional time travel journey.

I'm also pretty stingy with my five star reviews, so with that being said I'll tell you what I enjoyed most about the book:

1. The characters Carly and Hunter were the stars in the book They did all the narrating and I was rooting for them the entire way. The author did an excellent job of giving us the necessary details that allowed her to deliver strong characters throughout the story (Myra, Joanna, and all the rest). Hunter, the brains, insists he can make time travel possible, but can he?? His sister in law Carly, who needs a heart procedure done on her unborn child is willing to take that chance. Hunter knows the surgery is done successfully in the future and convinces Carly that it will work out.

2. I really enjoyed the world comparisons in date timelines... 1969, 1970, 2001, 2011,, 2013, all the changes, subtle and significant we tend to take for granted or forget. Technologies. Medical advancements, politics, war, it was a nice reminder.

3. I enjoyed that there were several twists in the story I never saw coming.

4. The fact that the story is not at all nice and tidy. S..t happens in the book just as it does in real life, it's the choices we make and how we deal with the choices that make life so interesting.

5. I must applaud the ending where we get a final glimpse of what happened to each player in the story, for better or worse, I liked the closure.

There was only one thing I would have liked to see the author elaborate on a little more and that was the relationship between Myra and Carly. The author made it clear that Myra was not particularly happy with Carly in all their dealings. The point was made many times that Myra was irritated and short with her. I thought for sure the author would touch on why this was so and kept waiting for the big reveal, it seemed relevant to explain Myra's abrupt almost rude behavior, but it never came.

Great read. Highly recommed.

I had a lot of work to get done yesterday. I did not get any of it done. Why? Because I got completely drawn in by the story and I could not put it down until I got to the end. This book marks the journey of Carly Sears, a 27 year old physical therapist, working in Richmond, VA in 1970. She meets a man on the job one day, who will work with no one, until he lays eyes on her and tells her he will work with her. She reminds him of someone he once knew. She believes he is a perfect man for her sister... and so he is. Carly, her sister Patti, Hunter (the man from the rehab) and Joe (her husband) all get along famously. However, Joe heads for Vietnam, where he is supposed to be doing work that will keep him off the front lines. Regardless, she learns that he died there and she is completely shattered. The only thing that keeps her going is her pregnancy... that Joe never learned about, because he died before her letter could even get to him to let him know of their good news. That is enough bad news, right? Well, apparently not, because her baby has something wrong, and it cannot be fixed. The baby will die after it is born. Unless a miracle happens.

Diane Chamberlain weaves a tale full of heart, that will blow the mind, and keep you guessing until the end. The story is creative, and gripping, and will keep you up well past bedtime. Well worth every minute of sleep lost and work undone, as it was fully and completely enjoyable.

Chamberlain’s latest novel will touch your very soul. Her heart-warming book straddles the line of improbability. You will instantly connect with the main character, Caroline Sears, who will do anything to save her unborn child. She takes a daring “leap of faith” and discovers a deep determination she never knew she had. A story of faith, family, and hope that will keep you engaged to the very last page!

I absolutely loved this book! I loved the time travel aspect of this novel. And I loved the characters! I don't read to many Diane Chamberlain books, but this one is a must read!
The only part that was a bit much for me was when Carly travels to 2001, it seemed as tho the year was as advanced as 2018 at times. Maybe it's my memory but texting wasn't as advanced as it was made out to be. While texting was possible it definitely wasn't as easy to do in 2001 as it was in 2018. Some things clashed with my memories of the electronic with what the writer wrote about as the year 2001, but none the less it was still extremely well written. Definitely will be recommending this novel to my Facebook reading group!

I’m a huge fan of Diane Chamberlain but I am not a sci-fi fan so when I read the time travel blurb I was a little skeptical. Within the first few pages I was hooked and could not put this one down! Chamberlain writes a novel of time travel so real and human that it could be anyone’s story. Her characters always pull you in so that you get to know them and care.
Carolyn Sears lives in the 70’s. She is newly widowed from the Vietnam War and pregnant with her first child. An unborn child that has medical problems and most likely won’t survive. Hunter, her brother in law tells her he knows how to save her baby but she must trust him. He then tells her something beyond her belief, something so crazy that he must be insane!
How far will she go to save her unborn child, how much trust can you place in somebody and the hardest is how much can the mind understand?
Compassionate, beautifully written novel that jumps between the decades to include moments in our history big and small that have changed the world and how the choices that we make can change those we know forever.
A must read!

The Dream Daughter is an extraordinarily well-written time-travel novel. Once I started the book I didn’t want to put it down, not even for a moment. The author pulled me into her story right from the start. I loved the realistic characters, the intriguing plot, and the flowing dialogue.

Hunter Poole is a physicist. He is from the future, 2018 to be exact, but he won’t be returning to the twenty-first century anytime soon, or ever. And, Hunter is okay with that. He loves the simpler life of the twentieth century. It’s 1970 and Hunter is a contented man. He has his lovely wife, Patti, by his side and their beautiful son John Paul. Hunter will always be grateful to Carly, his sister-in-law, for introducing him to Patti. But, it was time for him, to return the favor, and he was nervous.

Hunter never told Patti or Carly that he was from the future, but he was going to have to confess now. He owed it to Carly. Her unborn daughter wouldn’t live long after birth if she didn’t have a heart procedure soon. The problem was, however, that fetal surgery was unheard of in1970. Hunter was going to have to send Carly into the future. And, unfortunately, she was going to have to do it alone.

Carly would do anything to save her baby. She would never have thought that traveling through time was going to be the easy part of her journey. Unfortunately, she was going to need every bit of courage and strength she could muster up, to weather the challenges ahead.

The Dream Daughter is a fabulous novel. Highly recommended. I loved every page. Five well-deserved stars from this reader.

I've read all of Diane Chamberlain's books, and this one is one of my favorite.
It's a little different that what she usually writes, but I enjoyed the book and read it in 1 day. What is truly a mother's love is depicted in the story along with a futuristic twist about time travel.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED this book! I just finished it yesterday and I have been gushing about it ever since! When I reached the part of the book that I realized it was about time travel, I groaned a little, as I am not a fan of sci-fi, but I am so happy that I was so captivated anyway and that I continued reading. I am so impressed with the storyline, the details, the creativity, and, of course, the writing itself. This is such a unique story with wonderful characters that I fell in love with right from the beginning. It was definitely one of those books you read that that stays with you in your thoughts for a long, long time. This is absolutely one of my favorite books yet; It was an emotional and gripping read, and was so beautifully written. I highly recommend it!

Loved this book! I started reading it with a little hesitation, but could not put it down. The time travel element seemed a little too sci fi at first, but it totally worked! I’ve already recommended this to my book club.

Diane Chamberlain just gets better with each book! I thought Neccessary Lies was my favorite book by her but after reading The Dream Daughter, I was just blown away, especially since she added a time travel, fantasy type aspect to the novel that made it one compulsively addictive read!

Chamberlain's newest novel is one of the most amazing books I've read all year. This was a heartwrenching, emotional story, but joyful too. I can't recommend The Dream Daughter highly enough! It definitely deserves 5 stars! I'm certain you'll love it as much as I did.

Diane Chamberlain steps out of her typical writing style in The Dream Daughter and brings us a time travel novel that keeps us on the edge of our seats. This book is outstanding!
Carly is a young mother to be in the 1970's who learns that her unborn child has a heart defect, and will likely die soon after being born. Her brother-in-law is a physicist, and is confident that if he sends Carly into the future,the heart defect can be corrected in utero. Carly takes this leap, and goes into the future and is accepted into an experimental program and the surgery is performed. The book takes us back and forth between periods of time and is exquisitely executed,fast paced, and has the reader holding their breath during many parts of the book. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would highly recommend picking up a copy.

Another great book by Diane Chamberlain! The characters in this story are so relatable I couldn't walk away! I wasn't sure I would like the time traveling component of this book but the story and characters made it impossible not to love. I am so glad I received an ARC of this book and can't wait to read more by this author. A must read!!! The twists and turns in the plot make for a great story and you will be lost in time as you read this 5 star book!

The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain

I have had this on my shelf to read for quite some time. I am so grateful that I went into this story completely blind. I do have to congratulate Diane Chamberlain for writing a novel so filled with a mother's love for her child that at times my stomach felt twisted in knots. Anybody that has ever given birth to their first child can relate how powerful and phenomenal the love and attachment is and we would go to the end of the earth to protect our baby. Somewhere in the text of this novel it said show me a mother and I'll show you a hero.

That fierce love and innate yearnings we feel towards our children are so remarkably present in the descriptions written about Carly our main character. If ever a book that I have read about the bonds between mother and child so strongly depicted it is this book. Carly is pregnant and while getting an ultrasound finds out the grim news that the baby she is carrying has a fatal heart defect. The next blow comes when the doctor tells her there is nothing that can be done and that the baby will most certainly die as soon as Carly gives birth. This is even more excruciating because this baby is the only tangible piece of her husband who has died in Vietnam before he knew she was pregnant.

I was particularly moved at the heartbreaking descriptions and the strong emotions I felt later in the book. I am afraid to mention these vivid scenes as I don't want to spoil it for anybody who hasn't yet read this amazing book. I never read science fiction or fantasy and I was completely blown away at how finely executed the scenes of time travel worked so enjoyably for me. I would have passed on this one as it is the first I have ever read if I knew before being so thoroughly captivated that time travel could be used as cleverly as the author uses it.

My strongest suggestions to those who would pass on this novel is to please give it a chance. I promise you that this book delivers on such an extremely multilayered level of transporting you to experience parental love and you will remember that magical time when you first locked eyes with your own children. You will feel deeply how far you would go to protect your child from harm. It will reawaken memories of how profound and what a miracle it was to give birth and how instantaneous you loved your baby and how you would do anything to ensure that your baby will thrive.

After reading a well-known time traveler story, I was hesitant to read The Dream Daughter, but I am so glad that I did. I couldn't put this book down. I read it in 2 days - record time for me. There are two main characters, Caroline and Hunter. Hunter is the time traveler who helps Caroline get care for her daughter who is very ill with a heart condition that can't be cured in 1970 but can be in the 21st century. This is the story of loss and discovery on a decade's long span that is more believable than you can even imagine. Filled with unexpected turns, you are not going to want to miss this novel by Diane Chamberlain! Highly recommended!

I really like this author’s books and this one was no exception I loved the characters and the idea of the story! Love time travel books!!! It was hard to put down, I read it in one afternoon. I will be telling everyone to read this book! Thank you for letting me read an early copy!

I’ve read all of Diane Chamberlains books and this one is a work of art, truly. While the story is a work of fiction, during those 300 pages, I believed that time travel was possible. The charters were so well developed, I felt as if I was right there with them from 1970-2022.
I felt so connected to the charters and the story. Excellent read. I would highly recommend.

This book is amazing! The main character, Carly, time travels in this book but it is very easy to follow. Carly has to make some very hard decisions and you find yourself wanting everything to work out for her. I really enjoyed this book and the characters are very relatable. There are suprised throughout the book to keep you guessing!

Diane Chamberlain’s novel The Dream Daughter starts in 1965 and encompasses time travel, the bond between parents and children, and the love of family. Carly a physical therapist encounters Hunter, a patient suspected of a failed suicide attempt. His mysterious origins and questionable mental health don’t deter her from introducing him to her sister. Years later Carly is a widow losing her husband to Vietnam and pregnant with a child thats heart defect has been deemed fatal. Hunter offers her hope in time travel. Carly’s trip into the future doesn’t come without loss. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Loved it. The blurb sets up this book perfectly. It’s 1970 and you’ve just been told your unborn child has a serious untreatable heart defect. Your husband was recently killed in the Vietnam war and this child is the last link you have to the love you once shared. When your brother in law suggests there may be a way to repair your child’s heart problem how can you not jump at the chance to save this baby.

I am strangely drawn to the concept of time travel. Each author has a different take on the mechanics and the impact moving between decades can have on historical events and the main players ability to handle their new (old) surroundings. Diane Chamberlain gets it right in The Dream Daughter. The book is told in alternating chapters from Carly (the mom to be) and Hunter’s (the brother in law) point of view. His knowledge and her desperate need makes for a compelling and memorable read. Prepare yourself for an emotional roller coaster ride.

If you’ve ever questioned to what lengths a mother will go to save her child this novel will suggest the answer is anything possible or impossible.

A terrific read I won’t soon forget. This is one book I would love to see turned into a movie.
