Description

World-famous Egyptologist Dr. Winston Thornsley died suddenly two months ago in disgrace. His widow, Ida Thornsley, remains convinced her husband was falsely accused of stealing an ancient burial urn he discovered in Egypt last summer, but local and federal law enforcement officers are stumped.

Mrs. Thornsley, desperate for answers, calls in her thirteen-year-old neighbors, the Botanic Hill Detectives—twins Lanny and Lexi Wyatt, Moki Kalani, and Rani Kumar. Their exciting mission? To find the urn and its real thief, bring the criminal to justice, and exonerate Dr. Thornsley so his spotless reputation can be restored.

A roomful of venomous snakes, the poisoned Egyptian pond, and Dragon Pit Man are just a few of the tests awaiting the four tech-savvy teenagers. As the detectives begin to unravel the sinister plot, the mystery takes a dangerous turn. Answers are at their fingertips—if they can only convince their parents to let them solve the case.

If you have middle-graders who imagine themselves super sleuths, A Botanic Hill Detectives Mystery—Book 1, NUTMEG STREET: EGYPTIAN SECRETS is a good bet. Four thirteen-year-old amateur detectives of mixed heritage are determined to help a neighbor clear her late husband of a serious crime she knew he didn’t commit. During the development of the plot, kids learn about ancient Egypt, snake poison, a condition call synesthesia, with some Hawaiian words thrown in. Twists and turns and suspicious characters keep showing up to complicate things, but our clever protagonists keep on track, and eventually figure it all out. A fun map at the beginning helps visualize the locations, and the story ends enticing readers to look forward to a new adventure involving the four likable teenagers. Author Sherrill Joseph obviously did an amazing amount of research to include accurate details for her young readers. Soon to be released by Acorn Publishing. Look for it!

I loved everything about this book- the story, the setting and especially the characters. Sherrill Joseph has penned the perfect first novel of a series. The Botanic Hill Detectives are four smart, hard-working young sleuths who slice through this mystery involving a dead Egyptologist and a missing urn. Joseph’s fast-moving prose and sense of humor were delightful!

Nutmeg Street: Egyptian Secrets is a fascinating, informative, fun read about four junior detectives, who follow the clues to solve the mystery. The story is filled with facts and information about Egyptology, using authentic words with explanations of meanings following. The story includes enhanced comprehension devices such as a detective who loves to give definitions of words, another detective who uses authentic Hawaiian words, and a Hawaiian dictionary at the end. There is also a map of Botanic Hill for visual enrichment. Add these to a fun mystery, and you won't be disappointed.
