The Escape Room

What an incredible book!?!? I devoured this title in about 3 hours as I simply COULD NOT put it down. A new author for me, I was interested after catching that it was recommended by Lee Child and OMG am I glad I did. Megan Goldin surely has herself a new fan! I truly could not put this book down - kept me on the edge of my seat from page one!

The story takes us through Sara Hall's point of view, a recent MBA graduate a few months out of school and still looking for work. A random encounter in an elevator after the worst interview of her life leads her to her big chance to break into Wall Street Finance.

We also follow four executives participating in a required corporate team building exercise that has them trying to escape a locked elevator. When nerves start to flare and everyone ends up on edge, the real answers start to come out... secrets shared, faults uncovered and a murderer exposed.

HIGHLY recommended and I'll surely be back for more from this author!

Don't you just love when you go into a book not really knowing anything about it and find yourself just devouring it? That is what happened when I picked up The Escape Room. I loved this book. The book involves four people who are summoned to do a mandatory team building exercise involving an Escape Room game. Once they all enter the elevator, it quickly becomes clear that this isn't just your ordinary escape room game.

The book goes between the present in the elevator and the past narrated by Sarah Hall. She is an ambitious business school graduate who is hired to work in a prestigious firm on Wall Street. That is all you need to know going into the book. The story was pretty fast paced and kept me engaged. I had an idea of who was behind everything, but I didn't know the why or the how. That was the best part of the book. I highly recommend this one. I have a feeling it will make my top 10 of 2018.

The Escape Room by author Megan Goldin is a phenomenal novel about a game gone horribly dark. It turns into survival to live for colleagues while trying to escape a work exercise. The entire story is palmary and I thoroughly enjoyed it to the last page!

Wow! What a suspenseful, emotional story. I was sucked in from the beginning. Sarah worked at soul sucking financial company that demanded their employees devote most of their time to making money for the company with little thought to their personal life and well being. Not to mention its a cut throat, corrupt environment that is particularly hostile to women, minorities and people with disabilities. Ring a bell? Way too close to home. The author excels at depicting flawed, corrupt characters and displaying their ugliness Ness as they fight to survive in an enclosed elevator. We are given a Bird's eye view of their lives, their thoughts and actions. I clapped gleefully when they got what they deserved at the end.

It just goes to show that money and prestige isn't everything. A definite recommend!

Holy Heck!!! The Escape Room is a fast paced thriller that completely blew me away!!! The smartly written storyline will have you trying to figure out the who, what, where and when until the very last page! There were twists and turns that had their own twists and turns—loved that! Megan Goldin told this novel in alternating (character) perspectives as well as time hopped throughout which worked perfectly to add intrigue and suspense! The Escape Room is a 5 star read that I HIGHLY recommend! I am so excited to read Megan Goldin’s prior novel (The Girl in Kellers Way) and I am already looking forward to whatever she comes out with next!

Insane book. I really enjoyed the detail the author goes through concocting a tale that resonates with today's people that have an interest in escape rooms. This book wasn't what o expected and I found myself enjoying every second trying to figure out along with those trapped what exactly is going on.

I really enjoyed this thriller. The author used alternating narrators to really build the suspense and kept me eagerly turning pages, wondering how everything was going to come together. The story was unique and interesting, and the characters were well developed. I’m eager to read other books from this author.

Super unique book for me. Adrenaline rush, paranoia, secrets, lies, back stabbing coworkers, murder, fast paced Wall Street lives with money, power and LIES! It’s all in the Escape Room!
Very cleverly written and yes I could feel the claustrophobia in that elevator!

It’s very rare to find a book where halfway thru I am researching the author to see what else I can read from her and that’s what I did here.
This book had me hooked early on and I devoured this book. The flashbacks really made you interested in figuring out what was happening.

I absolutely loved this novel! It kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire story and had me guessing who might be behind the escape room setup at every turn. As someone who tends to read really disturbing and gory psychological thrillers, this was a pleasant change to keep me intrigued in the mystery without the fears of walking home at night or going to sleep.

I recommended this book to a lot of my friends who like a good mystery, but can't handle the details in Karin Slaughter type books and we will be adding Megan Goldin to our book club authors to read!

This intriguing novel kept my rapt attention throughout. Ms. Goldin did an excellent job of keeping me glued to the pages.

I read this in an afternoon, it was that exciting.

Initially I was dubious about what seemed to be the four main characters because they were so thoroughly unlikeable. I really do need a character to "root" for as it were, please read on!

The four, Vincent, Sylvie, Sam and Jules work in the cut-throat world of finance on Wall Street. You need to be devious and willing to do anything to get ahead and stay ahead in the industry, where you are only as good as your last deal. Millions are at stake with every deal and so is your job.

So when they are all summoned on a Friday night to appear for a team building exercise they have no option but to attend. The team building turns out to be an escape room exercise, except it's an elevator and they have to solve clues in order to escape. The puzzle is what happened to Sara Hall.

It was a pleasure to read a novel with a more novel plot! I will definitely be on the look our for more of the author's work.

From the very beginning, The Escape Room captures readers and holds them on the wild ride throughout the entire novel. This psychological thriller is one of the best I’ve read all year.

We begin at the end, where the horror is laid out for us in grusome detail. Then we start at the beginning, both for the lead character, Sara Hall and the 4 high powered investment bankers summoned to an abandoned building for a team building, “Escape Room”.

Sara’s character is relatable and her story is similar to most. She had just graduated college and is looking for a job that will help support her ailing parents. Finance seems lucrative, and so after months of rejection she happens upon just the right person in an elevator and lands a job at a high powered firm in New York City.

The team in the Escape Room elevator are coworkers of the firm and quickly find that this isn’t a normal Escape Room. The clues are morbid and soon the torture begins. The characters are developed here so well and we get a true sense of each one, their histories and their true motives.

This novel was one of my favorite reads this year. It was engaging, well written and the characters were well developed.

Would give this one SIX stars if I could - read it in record time! I loved this tale of personal lives entwined in the world of business. Sara is hired by a powerful financial group after she completes her MBA. She's excited about her great new position and the incredible wages she is earning. Sara learns quickly that all is not what it seems in the cutthroat world of finance.

Goldin writes in a manner easy to read. I enjoyed the "back and forth" format of the chapters, which seemed to heighten the tension and mystery. The chapters are short and manageable and I didn't feel I needed to go back to reread anything for clarification.

I recommend this book to those of us who appreciate contemporary conflict, with satisfying resolution.

Very, very interesting take on the "Escape Room" craze that many of us have enjoyed. Four normal folks (read VILLIANS) are locked not only in a small space but in a small nightmare that keeps growing. Great pacing and character development.

Fabulous “locked room” mystery by Goldin. The Escaoe Room delivers a well-formed read that engrossed until the final page.

I couldn’t put it down...hooked from the first page...twists and turns all over the place, and an ending that I didn’t see coming.
I loved the idea of the book from the description and it did NOT disappoint!
I encourage you to go out and buy this book...Megan Goldin is about to become one of your favourite authors!

Dear Megan Goldin, today I was a terrible mother to my children and I blame you. I should have played with them a bit more, but instead I was solely focused on finishing "The Escape Room" and was not to be bothered.

I didn't really know what I was getting into with this one. The plan was to read for ten minutes before going to bed... it was a bad idea. An hour later, I was mad at myself for not staying up later to read. "The Escape Room" is fast-paced and fun. There are some hard-to-believe moments as everything came together, but as a reader, I was okay with that because the pacing and story-telling was great.

In the very beginning of the book, you are thrown into a dire situation: A security guard is working a night shift in a large building that is not yet open to the public. He hears a scream, a gunshot, and the elevator.
Without giving too much away, the elevator becomes the scene of the escape room--4 elite co-workers are stuck in an elevator. They thought they were being put in an escape room situation as a team building exercise, and when that goes wrong they attempt to understand who put them there, why they are there, and how to get out. I'm too much of a coward to play at actual escape room mysteries, but it was a lot of fun reading about one!

I really enjoyed this book, it wasn't super fast past, or super fun to me, but it grabbed my attention and kept me going. The parallel between past and present was pretty easy to distinguish. The world building was pretty good, the only thing I wasn't really fond of was the constant switch between third person and first person. The book kinda crawled until the last 25%, then it sped through super fast like the author realized how many pages she already had and didn't want to write any more. I also wished there was a little bit more of a reveal in the ending, but at the same time, I like how it ended, perfect getaway type situation.

Great book! the ending is the only reason I didn't absolutely love it enough to grant it 5 stars, but it was still a really good book
